Early life & musical beginnings

Born on February 14, 1969, in Kwadaso, Kumasi, Ghana, Dada KD developed a passion for music at a young age. By the time he was seven, he was already inclined toward music, and by 15, he was playing musical instruments in church. His early experiences included visiting homes during Christmas with friends, playing instruments, and singing—an activity that shaped his musical journey.

Career & achievements

Despite initial setbacks in joining professional bands due to his young age, Dada KD persevered. His breakthrough came when he met Michael Osei Agyemang, who helped him record his debut album, Honey Love, at GEE MAN’s studio. He went on to release several successful albums, including:

  • Eden na megyee
  • Somgye
  • Ebeboawo
  • Obiara Se Eye
  • Mewura / Odom u anigyebi

His music was heavily influenced by Nana Adumako Nyamekye and Michael Bolton, blending traditional highlife rhythms with contemporary sounds. Over the years, he collaborated with bands such as Relatives in Germany, Kojo Antwi’s Band, Tropical Vibes, and Amakye Dede’s Band. His contributions to music earned him the Best Male Vocal Artist award at the Ghana Music Awards UK in 2004.

Personality & personal life

Dada KD was known for his outspoken nature, often addressing challenges faced by musicians in Ghana, including financial struggles and inadequate royalty distribution. He was passionate about improving the industry and spoke candidly about the difficulties artists faced.

Despite his success, he held unconventional views on marriage, stating that he did not see it as part of his life plan. He had three children in Germany but remained unmarried, choosing to focus on his music and personal principles. His favorite food was fufu with smoked fish light soup, and he enjoyed playing draught, clubbing, and listening to music.

Sudden passing

Dada KD passed away on May 16, 2025, at the age of 56. His manager confirmed that he had fallen ill earlier that day and was rushed to Gbawe SDA Hospital, where he unfortunately passed away.

His sudden demise shocked the entertainment industry, especially since he had shown no prior signs of illness2. He was preparing for a show in London scheduled for May 25, 2025, before his untimely passing.

His legacy remains strong, with fans and industry colleagues mourning the loss of a highlife legend whose music touched many lives. His contributions to Ghanaian music will continue to inspire generations to come.
