Who is Ryan Kelley and why did the FBI raid his home?
Ryan Kelley is a Republican candidate for governor of Michigan.
He is one of five Republicans on the August primary ballot, competing to take on Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer in November’s general election.
Ryan Kelley’s home was raided by the FBI in the early hours of Thursday.
Why was Ryan Kelley arrested?
Ryan Kelley was arrested at his home in Allendale in western Michigan by the FBI on Thursday, June 9, 2022, in connection with the 6 January Capitol riots.
He is facing four misdemeanor charges related to the Capitol breach, including disorderly conduct.
Mr. Kelley has confirmed he was in Washington DC on 6 January but denied engaging in illegal activity or even entering the Capitol building.
He reportedly answered “understood” to most of the judge’s questions regarding his rights and responsibilities.
The initial proceeding took place in a Grand Rapids federal courtroom, although the charges were filed in Washington D.C.
His arrest on Thursday morning came just hours before a congressional committee investigating the Capitol riots held the first of at least six public hearings.
