This is the moment a young girl dialled 999 when her mum collapsed on the floor – telling the operator at the start of the call that she was “having a bit of my lunch”.
Mya Bentley, 4, dialed 911 after seeing her mother, Rachel Lang, 25, collapse on the floor at their home in Hamble, near Southampton.
Ms Lang has a functional neurological disorder, which can cause stroke-like symptoms and seizures.
Mya had only learned about 999 at school the week before and was at home alone with her mother when she called for assistance.
On the phone to police controller Paul Dawes, Mya opened the exchange by calmly telling him, “I’m just having a bit of my lunch” when he asks what she’s doing.
She then told him her mum had fallen over and was “sleeping” and that her dad was at work.
Mya could be heard asking, “Can you help my mummy?”, while the controller reassured her.
Mya confidently and clearly gave Dawes all the details of their home address before opening the door to let the police in at around 8pm on 26 October.
Ms Lang said she can’t remember much of what happened on the night, as Mya was trying to wake her up but couldn’t.
She said: “I obviously couldn’t remember what she said but when I came round the police and paramedics said Mya had called them.
“I couldn’t believe it, I didn’t know she knew how to do that…
“I’m really, really proud of her. I’m amazed that she was able to do that and that she knew what to say and stayed so calm and didn’t panic.”
Mya received a certificate for her bravery from Hampshire Police’s Contact Management Team and stood in front of her class to tell them about her exploits.
“I just want to say a big thank you to the man who answered the phone because he kept her calm and kept her on the phone, and sometimes with four-year-olds they can get easily distracted, so he did a really good job,” Ms Land added. “I am extremely grateful for the assistance provided by the police and paramedics.”
Dawes, 45, said: “For a four-year-old she did so well. I was just doing my job, it was her who was so impressive for such a young girl.
“I have been a controller for 13 years. It can be a rewarding career.
“It is tough work but when calls come in like this one and we get a positive outcome, it makes it all worthwhile.”
