Gerrit is the elder son of Mark Cole and Sharon Cole, Mark Cole has been with Sharon Cole for more than 40 years.
Mark Cole and his brother, Jim, went to Sylvan Christian School and later played football at East Christian High School before the family moved to New York in 1970. Mark eventually returned to the area and graduated from Calvin College.
Mark Cole was a Grand Rapids native.
