Who is Kieran Hamill? Man killed by car minutes after stabbing sex offender to death

Cops believe a man was killed by a car just minutes after he stabbed a sex offender to death.

Kieran Hamill, in his late 30s and from Cullaville in Co Armagh, investigators in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, believe he attacked Christopher Mooney, 60, at Mooney’s home in Broomfield, outside Castleblayney.

The alarm was sounded at 6.30 a.m. after Mooney’s brother, who had a previous conviction for gross indecency, called the property.

When the relative arrived, he was verbally abused and shoved by a man who then fled the house.

Before fleeing on foot, the suspect is said to have mentioned the murder.

Mooney’s relative discovered him lying on the sofa, covered in blood.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and had been stabbed multiple times. His home had also been ransacked.

The scene of the gruesome killing was last night still being examined by the Garda National Technical Bureau.

A short time later, Hamill was killed after he was struck by a car at Ballynacarry bridge.

He had been walking when he was hit on the N53 Castleblayney to Dundalk road.

It’s not clear if he deliberately jumped in front of the vehicle.

We also understand gardai are probing if Hamill had mental health issues in the past.

Although Gardai are keeping an “open mind” on the investigation, they are probing if Mooney’s past was linked to the attack.

They are also colluding closely with the PSNI on the investigation.

Mooney, who had previously been targeted by criminals after his release from prison, had kept a low profile in recent months.

“When Mooney served time in prison for abusing the child, there wasn’t too much said about it,” a local who went to school with him said.

“After he was released from prison he was bundled into a van and attacked before returning to Blayney.

“He kept a very low profile and didn’t interact much with locals.

“People are genuinely shocked that something as awful as this has happened.”

The post mortems on the two bodies are due to be held later today.

Gardai are also examining if anyone else was involved in the murder before Hamill was disturbed at the property.

According to one source, “it is very early in the investigation and gardai will investigate all avenues as a possible motive.”

“The scene of the violent death was like a bloodbath and the property was also ransacked.

“The collision on the road happened at a very busy time of the morning and hopefully there are witnesses who can come forward with information.”

Mooney was convicted of gross indecency in 2003 in connection with the abuse of a young boy.

Kieran Hamill, 37, was scheduled to appear in court on December 12 for an alleged affray in May at a Castleblaney address.

He was also facing two charges stemming from an incident in Dundalk last December and was scheduled to appear in court in February of next year.

He had been charged with assaulting a woman and threatening to damage her property.

“Gardai continue to investigate all circumstances surrounding the discovery of a man’s body at a residential premises at Knockreagh Lower, Broomfield, Co Monaghan,” a Garda spokesperson said last night.

“The results of the post mortem will determine the course of the investigation.

“The house remains a crime scene, and the investigation is ongoing.”

“Gardai are asking anyone who was in the Broomfield area between 5 a.m. and 6.45 a.m., especially anyone with mobile phone or dashcam footage, to contact Castleblayney Garda station on 0429740668.”
