Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego is a Colombian economist, politician, and former guerrilla warrior who is also the country’s president-elect. On June 19, 2022, he defeated Rodolfo Hernández Suárez in the second round of the presidential election.
He joined the guerrilla group 19th of April Movement when he was 17 years old, which eventually evolved into the M-19 Democratic Alliance, a political party in which he was elected to the House of Representatives in the 1991 election.
Following the 2006 parliamentary election, Petro was elected to the Senate as a member of the Alternative Democratic Pole party, which received the second-largest vote in the country. He resigned from his position in 2009 to run for President of Colombia in the 2010 presidential election, coming fourth.
He formed the Humane Colombia movement to contest for the mayoralty of Bogotá after issues and ideological differences with the leaders of the Alternative Democratic Pole. He was arrested on October 30, 2011.
