The Egyptian actor Samir Sabri passed away at the age of 86 in a hotel in Cairo on Friday.
One of the biggest names in Egyptian entertainment, Sabri was born in Alexandria in 1936 where he enrolled at Victoria College before going on to study in the English language department at the faculty of Arts, Alexandria University.
Sabri’s singing in several films was characterized by comic elements combined with occasional usage of more than one language which evoked the cosmopolitan character of Alexandria’s golden age. In fact, Sabri’s Alexandrian origins combined with stardom prompted writer Mofeed Fawzi to refer to him as “Ambassador of Alexandria.”
Sabri’s career as an actor, entertainer, TV, and radio host began with hosting the English-language radio show At Your Request.
