Sadio Mane: Senegal forward to miss World Cup due to injury suffered playing for Bayern Munich
Sadio Mane, a forward for Senegal, was playing for Bayern Munich when he suffered a leg injury that will keep him out of the World Cup.
In Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga victory over Werder Bremen last Tuesday, the 30-year-old sustained a right fibula injury.
Mane was selected for Senegal’s 26-man World Cup squad despite the injury, but the former Liverpool forward will not play in Qatar because he is unable to recover.
Senegal’s football federation announced on Tuesday that Mane would miss their “first games” of the competition, forcing head coach Aliou Cisse to make other plans without his star player.
Senegal’s announcement that Mane would not be participating in the World Cup was followed by Bayern’s announcement that Mane had “successful” surgery on Thursday night in Austria.
The German champions released the following statement: “On Thursday night in Innsbruck, Sadio Mane underwent successful surgery by Prof. Christian Fink and Dr. Andy Williams from London.
“A tendon was reattached to the head of his right fibula during the procedure. As a result, the Bayern forward won’t be able to represent Senegal at the World Cup and will start his recovery in Munich soon.
