O Young-su: Squid Game actor, 78, will go on trial in February for indecent assault

O Young-su, the Squid Game actor accused of ‘touching’ a woman, will stand trial for indecent assault in February, according to a South Korean court.

O Young-su, 78, was charged with the allegations last week. The woman filed a complaint against O in December 2021, but the case was closed in April without charges being filed against Yeong-su, according to Yonhap news agency.

However, the prosecutor’s office in Suwon, south of Seoul, reopened the case and conducted an investigation into the allegations, which Yeong-su has consistently denied.

The woman accused him of making unwanted physical contact during a meeting in 2017. But O denied wrongdoing, telling a reporter from JTBC that he held the woman’s hands to ‘show her the way’ as they walked round a lake.

According to JTBC, he apologized to the woman last year not because he acknowledged the accusations against him, but because the woman allegedly told him she ‘wouldn’t raise an issue’ about the incident if he did.

O became the first South Korean actor to win a Golden Globe in January, when he was named best supporting actor for his role in the hit Netflix show.

O was also nominated for an Emmy for his performance in the Squid Game. He portrayed O Il-nam, a mysterious elderly contestant who is involved in the games.

Squid Game is a drama about a desperate group of adults who compete in lethal children’s games for a chance to escape severe debt and win £45.6 billion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in congratulated the drama’s crew, saying that the series gave hope to humanity despite depicting society in a negative light.

Squid Game is a huge hit in South Korea, inspiring real-world recreations and social media memes. This includes O’s use of the word ‘kkanbu,’ which is a rough translation of ‘friend.’

O was born in 1944 in Kaepung, North Korea. He is regarded as one of South Korea’s best stage actors, having appeared in over 200 productions since 1963 and winning numerous awards.

He has also played many charismatic supporting roles in film and television, including in ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring’ released in 2003 by late award-winning director Kim Ki-duk.

Because of his portrayal of a Buddhist monk in the film, O earned the moniker “monk actor.” He also played the same character in other films, television shows, and commercials.

He stated in October that he decided to join Squid Game because he admired the director’s insight into social irregularities.

‘Our society operates as if only No. 1 survives,’ he said. No. 2 fell to No. 1 but defeated No. 3. After all, everyone comes out on top.’

Kim Myeong-un, a district prosecutor’s office official in Seongnam, said the office could not confirm specific details about O’s case.
