Katie Kenyon: Man jailed for murdering mother-of-two with axe and burying body in forest

Katie Kenyon, whose body was discovered in a shallow burial in a forest, was murdered, and a man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 32 years.

The mother-of-two was struck an estimated 12 times, according to a post mortem, despite Burnley resident Andrew Burfield, 51, first claiming the axe attack was an accident.

On the third day of his trial at Preston Crown Court, he changed his plea.

Burfield, who was dating Miss Kenyon, 33, was alleged to have had a picnic at Gisburn Forest in Lancashire in April.

Then he said she had “bet” him she couldn’t be hit with his axe while holding her Coke can.

His assertion that he accidentally hit Miss Kenyon was deemed “totally improbable” by a forensic pathologist.

The day after she passed away, Burfield dug a grave in the Lancashire Forest of Bowland for her body.

He allegedly used her phone after she passed away to send messages to himself and her kids.

Police found Miss Kenyon’s body a few days later. Burfield initially told police that he didn’t know where she was before subsequently changing his story.

Andrew Burfield is a vicious, vengeful guy who “decided to run a trial despite the overwhelming evidence in this case,” Detective Chief Inspector Allen Davies said after Burfield changed his plea.
