Hilary Mantel dead – Bestselling Wolf Hall author dies ‘suddenly yet peacefully’ aged 70
The writer, best known for her Wolf Hall Trilogy, passed away “suddenly yet peacefully” surrounded by close friends yesterday.
Mantel won the Man Booker Prize twice for Wolf Hall and its sequel Bring Up the Bodies, which also won the Costa Book of the Year award in 2012.
The Mirror & the Light, the series’ conclusion, was released in 2020 and quickly became a best-seller.
The trilogy has been translated into 41 languages and has sold over five million copies worldwide.
“It is with great sadness that A.M. Heath and HarperCollins announce that bestselling author Dame Hilary Mantel DBE died suddenly yet peacefully yesterday, surrounded by close family and friends, aged 70,” her publisher said in a statement.
“Hilary Mantel was one of the greatest English novelists of this century and her beloved works are considered modern classics.
“She will be greatly missed.”
