Gary Rossington is an American musician and founding member of the southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He was born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, and he grew up in a musical family.

Rossington began playing the guitar as a teenager, and he formed Lynyrd Skynyrd with his childhood friend Ronnie Van Zant in 1964.

As a guitarist, Rossington has been an integral part of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s sound and has written or co-written many of the band’s most famous songs, including “Free Bird,” “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Tuesday’s Gone.”

He has also played bass guitar, slide guitar, and harmonica on some of the band’s recordings.
