Family sues elite NY boarding school after son’s suicide in ‘solitary confinement’

Italian parents filed a lawsuit against a prestigious boarding school in Westchester County where their 17-year-old son committed himself, alleging that staff members kept the student in “solitary confinement” after he was expelled for plagiarism.

According to the lawsuit submitted on Friday in Westchester County Supreme Court by the boy’s father, Mauro Mandia, and another representative of the boy’s estate, the teenager had just been expelled from school for cheating on a math assignment when he was ordered by administrators to stay in a room by himself.

In spite of knowing that Claudio had been coping with personal concerns that had affected his academic performance, the lawsuit accuses school administrators of contributing to Claudio’s murder by placing him in solitary confinement while he was emotionally vulnerable.

The lawsuit claims that it was “painfully predictable” that placing [Claudio] in solitary confinement, depriving him of food, and providing him with insufficient supervision after informing him that he would be expelled — all while he was going through other difficulties that EF Academy was aware of and treating him for — would lead to his tragic death.

The lawsuit names EF Academy, four school executives, its parent firm, and 20 more unidentified defendants as defendants and charges them with wrongful death, negligence, false confinement, and emotional anguish among other things. The family of Claudio is asking for both retribution and punishment for the institution.

In a reply to NBC News, a representative for the school refuted the claim that Claudio was “kept in solitary confinement” and said the form contained “many false assertions.”

The statement read, “The narrative that is provided in the legal complaint is neither correct or founded on reality.” We are optimistic that the judicial system will enable us to present and establish a fact-based legal case outlining what truly happened.
