Charles was born in Buckingham Palace on 14 November 1948 at 9:14 p.m., during the reign of his maternal grandfather George VI, as the first child of Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh, and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

He was baptized there by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher, on 15 December 1948.
