England’s Saka won’t shy away from taking penalties – Ramsdale
Despite receiving racial slurs after missing a penalty shot in the European Championship final, Aaron Ramsdale encouraged Bukayo Saka to stand up if he were to be asked to take one at the World Cup.
Following a 1-1 tie after extra time, Saka and his England teammates Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho were the objects of online criticism when they missed spot-kicks in a 3-2 shootout loss to Italy.
Saka has scored three penalties for Arsenal in the Premier League since his miss in the championship game, including strikes in back-to-back matches against Chelsea and United in April.
Ramsdale responded, “certainly,” when asked by reporters if Saka would offer to take a penalty at the World Cup.
Ramsdale continued, “I think he’s realized that that was something that happened and perhaps had to happen for him.
“And given who he is and what it is, he wouldn’t be afraid to say it. He now understands how it feels, and maybe the next time he takes the field, he’ll do what he does for Arsenal and score.”
On Monday, England takes on Iran in Group B’s opening match before playing the United States and Wales.
