She attended Boise State University in Idaho, where she competed in cross-country and track and field events.
Bates has had a successful career as a professional runner. In 2016, she won the USATF Half Marathon Championships and finished sixth in the Olympic Trials for the marathon.
In 2018, she won the USATF 25K Championships and finished fourth in the Chicago Marathon.
In 2019, Bates won the USATF Marathon Championships and set a personal best time of 2:25:27, which qualified her for the 2020 Olympic Trials.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Olympic Trials were postponed to 2021.
