The suspect reportedly fled the scene after the shooting, and the police are investigating the incident.

This shooting took place less than six weeks after a 16-year-old student at East High School was fatally shot while sitting in his car outside the school.

At around 10 a.m. local time, Denver police released a statement on Twitter stating that they were collecting information regarding the incident outside East High School. They also noted that there would be a substantial police presence in the area east of downtown Denver.

Meanwhile, Denver Public Schools took to Twitter to announce that East High School was under lockdown “All students are in their third-period classrooms,” the district wrote on Twitter. “We are holding them there until further notice.”

At approximately 10:30 a.m., DPS officials announced that a controlled release of students would occur once the Denver Police Department allowed it.

Parents were advised to pick up their children at 17th Avenue and Esplanade. Students who drove to school would be escorted to their cars in the parking lot and allowed to leave, while those who took the bus would have to wait until their bus arrived.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives also confirmed that they were at the scene, but referred all queries to Denver police.

This incident follows a fatal shooting last month, which has left students feeling unsafe on campus. Luis Garcia, a junior, was shot while sitting in his car near East High School on February 13th.

He passed away from his injuries on March 1st. In response to the incident, students have been advocating for gun legislation and safer schools, including walking out of their classrooms and marching to the Colorado State Capitol earlier this month. The school has also received false reports of threats twice since the beginning of the school year.
