Grant was a standout in football and basketball at the University of Minnesota as a player. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1950 but instead opted to sign with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

Grant played for the Blue Bombers from 1950 to 1956, winning four Grey Cups (the championship of the CFL) in the process. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

After retiring as a player, Grant began coaching, first in the CFL with the Blue Bombers and later in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings.

He coached the Vikings from 1967 to 1983, leading the team to four Super Bowl appearances (in 1969, 1973, 1974, and 1976) and winning 11 division titles.

He was known for his emphasis on defense and his no-nonsense coaching style.

Grant retired from coaching in 1985 with a record of 158 wins, 96 losses, and 5 ties in the regular season, and a record of 10 wins and 12 losses in the postseason.
